Insights from Imagine Canada: Revisiting Budget 2021

In a recent blog post entitled Revisiting Budget 2021: The Culmination of a Remarkable Year of Nonprofit Advocacy, Imagine Canada addressed what the 2021 federal budget means for nonprofits and charities.  As stated in this post, “For the nonprofit sector, this budget represented a remarkable moment that showcased the considerable progress that we have made in advancing our relationship with the federal government in just the last year.”

Notable points from the post include:

  • In contrast to previous federal budgets, Imagine Canada found several positive signs in regard to nonprofits and charities.

  • The budget included several targeted measures for charities and nonprofits such as the Investment Readiness Program, new funding for the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, $400 million for the Community Services Recovery Fund, and the creation of the LGBTQ2 Project Fund.

  • It signifies the recognition that nonprofits are an essential part of our broader economy, for example, the inclusion of nonprofits within the new Canada Recovery Hiring Benefit, the extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy.
