Government of Canada Provides Additional Support to Charities and Nonprofit Organizations
On April 21, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $350 million in emergency funds to support vulnerable Canadians. The funding will support community-based charities and nonprofit organizations that deliver essential services to those in need, including seniors, persons with disabilities, members of LGBTQ2 communities, veterans, newcomers, women, children and youth, and members of Indigenous communities and racialized communities.
The funds will be disbursed through national organizations with networks across Canada, including United Way Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Community Foundations of Canada.
The funds will support a variety of activities, such as:
Volunteer-based home deliveries of groceries and medications.
Transportation services, such as accompanying or driving seniors or persons with disabilities to appointments.
Scaling up helplines that provide information and support.
Helping vulnerable Canadians access government benefits.
Providing training, supplies, and other required supports to volunteers contributing to COVID-19 response.
Replacing in-person, one-on-one contact, and social gatherings with virtual contact through phone calls, texts, teleconferences, or the Internet.
