Nonprofits at 2:00 (formerly Nonprofits at Noon) brings nonprofit professionals and other community leaders together in conversation about relevant issues. These gatherings provide you with timely information, meaningful discussions, and actionable insights – and provide the space for nonprofit professionals and leaders from other sectors to come together to discuss important issues in the community.


Session Details

In this Nonprofits at 2:00 session, Teresa Woo-Paw moderated a panel discussion focused on systemic racism and diversity in Alberta’s nonprofit sector, and how organizations and the community can work together to create an inclusive and safe space, supportive of all backgrounds. This gathering convened a panel of leaders who are passionate about influencing systemic change through equity and inclusion.

Anti-Racism Trainer and Organizational Capacity Builder at CommunityWise Resource Centre

Tyson has been working and volunteering in supporting neighbourhood life for as long as he can remember! His interest in community comes at the intersection of justice and community development, and his work is based on equity, wellness, and agency. His personal slogan is: “Promote Justice, Edify Others, and Befriend the Lonely”. Tyson has been a committed member of the Anti-Racism Organizational Change project (AROC) process since 2016, and is excited to further the process and build capacity for the newly created cooperative BLAC (Black Alliance Leadership Council) with the support of Community Wise Resource Centre.

Anti-Racism and Equity Strategy Lead at ActionDignity

Tyra is an experienced anti-racism organizer, facilitator, and content developer. As the Anti-Racism and Equity Strategy Lead at ActionDignity, she engages ethnocultural communities in anti-racism learning and action. Tyra led the Calgary-based Coalitions Creating Equity that helped establish the Alberta-wide Coalitions Creating Equity along with four other municipalities. She organized and facilitated a series of community conversations on Black Intersections, Racial Equity in Federal Elections, and other equity issues.  She has developed online content, including an online facilitated anti-discrimination course and a series of webinars on the intersection of racism and COVID-19. Tyra is also leading the Calgary CARES project which will work in close collaboration with racialized organizations and groups to do collaborative Anti-Racism work within the city.  

She is also involved with the Community Wise Resource Centre, both as a board member and as a member of the Anti-Racist Organizational Change project where she authored their anti-racism training manual.  

Tyra has done various anti-racism and equity presentations with the University of Calgary, SAIT, the Alberta Association of Midwives, the Calgary Women’s March, the Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies, and the 3.7% Initiative. 

Describing herself as not only Black, but also part Metis and part Scottish, Tyra first and foremost identifies as a Black activist. She was recently featured in 1919 Magazine’s Archival of the Black Radical Tradition, in recognition of her contributions as one of Black cultural workers around Canada who commit their art, creativity, and labour to honouring Black historicism and its subsequent impact on social and cultural tradition.

Vice President of Indigenous Relations & Equity Strategy at the Calgary Foundation

Tim is a proud member of the Blackfoot Confederacy from the Kainai (Blood) reserve. Tim is the Vice President of Indigenous Relations & Equity Strategy with Calgary Foundation where he hopes to strengthen, enhance and shift the culture and practice at the foundation while incorporating work of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and equity both internally and in the broader community. 

Tim facilitates Indigenous men’s domestic violence groups at the Calgary Correctional Centre, is Chair for The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada and is the proud father of a 9 year old daughter.

Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at ATB Financial

At ATB, Roselle heads up the strategic initiatives to weave equity and inclusion into all aspects of the organization's endeavours. Her work in the field of EDI is underpinned by 10+ years of working and teaching in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion; and within diverse sectors including social services, consulting, and post-secondary. Roselle holds a Master's degree from the University of Toronto in Sexual Diversity Studies and Religious Studies, and earned her PhD at the University of Calgary in the study of transnational immigrant identity, Canadian multiculturalism, and intersectionality. 

Roselle approaches her work with a sense of humour, and a reflexive, intersectional, anti-oppression, anti-racism framework to allow for more inclusive ways of understanding the world.

Calgary Arts Development President & CEO 

Patti is a veteran community and arts champion with an extensive track record of leadership and service in Calgary and beyond. She has deep and diverse experience in the arts sector, having served in senior leadership positions at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts (now Arts Commons), Alberta Performing Arts Stabilization Fund, and Alberta Theatre Projects, among others. She has been President & CEO of Calgary Arts Development since 2013 and led the organization through the process of doubling its budget in 2019. 

In the community, she just completed her full term on the board of The Calgary Foundation, serves as a board member with Toronto based Agora Foundation (publisher of the online journal The Philanthropist,) and serves on a committee for the Calgary Stampede. She was a founding board member of the Asian Heritage Foundation (Southern Alberta) and served on the steering committee for imagineCalgary as well as on the board of Canada’s oldest public radio station, CKUA Radio Network. She has also served as a board member for the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee and related entities whom explored the potential for Calgary to submit a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Patti has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and was the 2013 Harry and Martha Cohen Award, recognizing significant contribution to Calgary’s theatre community.

Independent Diversity Consultant  

Teresa is a tireless advocate for diversity, social inclusion, and active civic participation. She is known for her ability in bringing diverse people together to joint efforts, break new grounds, and create bigger impacts in society. Teresa has worked as a private consultant providing diversity training, program facilitation, and instruction including as Anti-Discrimination Trainer for the United Way of Calgary. She is currently the Chair of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation; Founder and Chair of ACCT Foundation, ACT2EndRacism National Network, and Asian Heritage Foundation; and Board member of Calgary Arts Foundation.

Teresa founded and built 7 non-profit organizations over a span of 40 plus years including the Action Dignity and the Calgary Chinese Community Service Association, among others. She is the first Asian Canadian woman elected to the Calgary Board of Education (1995-2000), the Alberta Legislature and Cabinet Minister in Alberta (2008-2015).

Some of the recognitions Teresa has been awarded include the Chinese Canadian Legend 2016, the YWCA Women of Distinction Award 1998, and the Immigrants of Distinction Award 1998.
