Policy work in action- CCVO Research Reports Tabled in Legislature
On April 22, MLA for Calgary-Mackay, Teresa Woo-Paw tabled a copy of the Impact of the Economic Downturn on Alberta's Nonprofits and Charities survey that CCVO prepared for Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector Leaders of the Alberta Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Initiative (ANVSI). In addition, on April 28, she also made a lengthy statement in the Legislature about CCVO's research report No Small Thing: Calgary's small nonprofits, charities and grassroots groups. Both of these statements help raise awareness with the provincial government about the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations in our sector.

New CRA Anti-Terrorism Checklist for Charities
The Canada Revenue Agency has released a new Checklist for Charities on Avoiding Terrorist Abuse to help charities identify vulnerabilities to terrorist abuse and develop good management practices. The checklist can be a reference for any charity - whether you carry out your work within Canada, or internationally. CCVO has additional information and anti-terrorism resources for charities available online.

The Canadian Council on Social Development will be hosting the first Canadian Social Forum in Calgary this May. The forum will bring together community leaders from social development, public health, environment, community safety and recreation to target both urban and rural poverty. Volunteers are still needed.

Multiculturalism Program call for project ideas
The Multiculturalism Program, Alberta and Northwest Territories offices, of Citizenship and Immigration Canada is requesting expressions-of-interest for projects that align with the recently released Application Guidelines for Funding. Please note that the first step is to complete the Preliminary Assessment Questionnaire by contacting Djaka Blais-Amare at 403-292-4139 prior to completing the Funding Application. The completed assessment must be returned by Friday, May 22nd 2009 at 4:30 p.m.
Grants for innovative adult learning projects
Each spring Calgary Learns provides grants to a maximum of $10,000 for Initiative Projects to research, develop and/or pilot innovative foundational learning opportunities for adult Calgarians. Contact Jeannie Finch (266-6444, ext 2) to receive a Request for Proposals and to discuss project ideas. Applications are due June 5, 2009.
