Update - Proposed Accounting Standards for Non-Profits

The Accounting Standards Board and the Public Sector Accounting Board will re-deliberate proposed standards based on the responses received to their "Invitation to Comment". Information can be found on the websites of the two boards.

 

Copyright, Technology and You

A nationwide consultation on copyright modernization is being held by the Government of Canada. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate online through forums, multimedia, and submitting papers or reports. Make your impact on the digital economy before September 13, 2009!

Imagine Canada Standards Program Web Conferences

Imagine Canada will be holding web conferences on their Standards Program. The Standards are voluntary guidelines of best practices in the areas of governance, human resources, and accountability, which are intended to encourage Canada's charities and nonprofits to enhance their operations and increase their effectiveness.

Workforce Strategy

On June 3rd, leaders from Alberta's non-profit sector and provincial government strategized workforce priorities identified in A Workforce Strategy for Alberta's Non-profit and Voluntary Sector. The meeting was held by the Alberta Workforce Council and the HR Council for the Voluntary and Nonprofit Sector. While the summary report from the even mostly focuses on Edmonton-area concerns, the information in the report is still valid and of potential interest for anyone involved with the Workforce Council.

 

Volunteer Canada launches Social Networking Tool for Corporate Volunteers

The Centre for Excellence in Corporate Community Involvement allows businesses and nonprofits from across the country to better communicate, promote employer-supported volunteerism, and work together in partnership as they exchange ideas, best practices, tools, and resources. This process will be facilitated by an innovative social networking tool found on the site.

 

Home Depot launches Charitable Rebate Program

Home Depot has launched a new program in cooperation with CanadianCommunities that offers a cash rebate to purchases made by non-profit and charitable organizations. The program is free, does not require a Home Depot credit card, and offers a 2% rebate.

 

Nonprofits Remain Resilient in Tough Times

A new US report by the Johns Hopkins Listening Post Project revealed that 83% of responding organizations encountered some type of financial stress in the period between September 2008 and March 2009. Nonprofits are also cutting back on expenses with 56% cutting administrative costs and 47% creating or expanding collaborative relationships with other nonprofits.

Nominate a Committed Volunteer for the Stars of Alberta Awards

The Government of Alberta annually honours individuals for their extraordinary volunteer contributions through the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards. Anyone whose volunteer efforts have played a significant role during the person's lifetime, and who is a current resident of Alberta, is eligible to receive an award. Nominations are due Friday, September 25, 2009.
