According to the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (NSNVO) conducted in 2003, Over 49% of the total funding for voluntary sector organizations in Canada comes from various levels of government. The funding for all organizations breaks down to the following:

• 40% from provincial governments;
• 7% from the federal government; and
• 2% from municipal governments.

This funding is the form of grants and contributions. For this reason, budget decisions at all levels are important to the sector.

To help ensure that the perspective of the sector is included in budget deliberations, CCVO has participated in the following ways:

Federal Budget

• August 2007 - CCVO Pre-Budget Consultation Submission (based heavily on the Imagine Canada submission)
• February 28, 2007- CCVO Submission to the Federal Government's 2007 Pre-Budget Consultations
• Jan 2007- Federal Pre-Budget Recommendations Address Sector Issues
  The 2007 pre-budget report from the Federal Standing Committee on Finance makes a number of recommendations related to the voluntary sector including changes to the Income Tax Act to support charitable giving, and a feasibility study to assess a tax measure that would recognize the hours of volunteer activity.
