Professional development is vital to the success of any organization, but many charities and nonprofits forgo it due to cost and time, especially during an economic slump.

As organizations struggle to find ways to meet the increasing needs of clients and cope with reductions in funding levels, investment in employee training is seen as a luxury they can ill afford. But as professional development expenditures are reduced, organizations are faced with a situation where they are in essence mortgaging their future ability in order to meet present service demands. What makes the situation even more precarious is that as the work environment becomes more complex, nonprofits will increasingly require employees with higher levels of skill and expertise.

It is with these factors in mind that the Calgary HR Initiative, a partnership between the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations and United Way of Calgary, has developed an innovative approach to providing affordable, world-class management training to nonprofit organizations.

Harvard Management Training

The Harvard ManageMentor program is a unique opportunity for the entire nonprofit and voluntary sector to receive high quality, affordable, flexible, self-directed training resources. The program is affiliated with the Harvard School of Business, one of the most respected business institutions in the world. Delivered online, participants gain knowledge and develop skills that can be tailored and applied to individual work situations. Click here for more information on the program.

“Through my experience and research, I believe Harvard ManageMentor 10 offers the most comprehensive, dynamic and cost-effective management development training out there, and coupled with the proposed hands-on peer-learning and discussions to compliment the material, the return on investment for Calgary’s voluntary and nonprofit sector will be endless,” says Quentin Sinclair, Human Resources Manager for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Calgary region.
