Nonprofits at 2:00 (formerly Nonprofits at Noon) brings nonprofit professionals and other community leaders together in conversation about relevant issues. These sessions provide you with timely information, meaningful discussions, and actionable insights.


Session Details

Last year, many nonprofits and charities saw a staggering decline in their overall donations and funding. As we move into 2021, innovative solutions are needed to ensure that the nonprofit sector remains a vital support for the prosperity of our communities through the pandemic and beyond. Social enterprise and social finance investments are often pointed to as one solution for how we move forward, but what does this really mean?

At this Nonprofits at 2:00, Neetu Sidhu of ATB Financial will moderate a panel of expert speakers who will discuss how social finance and social enterprises can support organizations in recovering lost revenue and establish more secure sources of revenue moving forward. Join us to unpack what social finance and social entrepreneurism are, why they matter to the future of our sector, and what it may mean for your organization.

Jordana Armstrong leads Innovate Calgary’s Social Innovation portfolio, supporting hundreds of impact-oriented researchers and entrepreneurs at UCalgary over the last 5 years who seek to use market approaches to achieve impact in communities they serve. Jordana launched Innovate Calgary’s first programs for social entrepreneurs in 2016 and 2017. She is committed to seeing capital work differently and embraces the principles of radical generosity (SheEO), and of "doing what you can, with what you have, where you can do it" (Roosevelt) as a member of Local Investing YYC, SheEO Activator, and emerging impact investor. She draws on experience as a Banff Centre ‘Getting to Maybe’ alumna, Director with Artistri Sud, and BioLite, Emerging Markets Fellow to inform her mission to create inclusive economic growth and resilient communities. Jane Bisbee is the Executive Director of the Social Enterprise Fund, one of Canada’s more active impact investment funds with more than $60M placed since 2008.                                             

A special focus of her career has been creation of non-traditional funding mechanisms for small business, in particular the cultural industries. She has served on many boards, received a lifetime achievement award from Alberta’s film industry, and is a fellow of the BALLE/RSF Financial Community Foundation Circle.

Sean worked in the private corporate sector for over 20 years, largely in the family entertainment, event, and tourism industries, and has a background in technical theatre arts & production, with a degree in Business Management. He has operated different restaurants and big box retail locations in Calgary, and has been involved in the design and construction of food service, retail, and theatre facilities. He has served on not-for profit-boards for over 15 years, acting as Chair and has extensive experience working in property and arts facility management. Sean became the President of Evergreen Theatre in 2004, stepping into the role of Executive Director in 2007. He is a Disney University Management graduate and received the Colin Jackson & Arlene Strom Creative Placemaking Award for his work on the Evergreen Community SPACES project. Sean is a huge believer in the business of the arts and supporting artists in business.

Dan is Executive Director of the Trico Charitable Foundation, which seeks to close gaps in society by provoking innovation and building capacity in social entrepreneurship. His highlights as E.D. include overseeing Canada’s hosting of the Social Enterprise World Forum in 2013 (over 1,000 attendees from over 30 countries and over 100 speakers); organizing the first official “social entrepreneurship day” in Calgary in 2016; overseeing the funding of key social enterprise infrastructure projects like the Changemakers Studio at Mount Royal University and the Social Entrepreneurship Centre at Haskayne; and publishing numerous case studies and blogs on social entrepreneurship.

Prior to Trico, Dan served as Director of Policy and Communications for the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC). He was an early adopter of CSR, shared value, and cluster theory; redesigned the MCC to focus on community values as well as entrepreneurial spirit; and oversaw the MCC’s participation in the anti-poverty campaigns ‘Raise the Rates’ and ‘Make Poverty History.’

Neetu is the Director of Everyday Advice at ATB Financial. Over the past 15 years, Neetu has designed and brought to market, strategies in fashion, technology, social enterprise, oil and gas, crowdfunding, marketing and banking. A social entrepreneur at heart, Neetu is interested in leveraging technology and business to drive positive social change. This led her to pursue an interdisciplinary Master’s degree at New York University in Social Entrepreneurship. During her time at NYU, Neetu founded a clothing business that provided sustainable employment to rural textile artisans in India. In her current role, Neetu is exploring how AI and experience design can create greater financial wellness for Albertans as we rebuild through this pandemic. Neetu also leads Ellevate, ATB’s gender equity network, mentors through the Young Women in Business (YWiB) Calgary Chapter and sits on the Board of QB Consulting, a San Francisco-based Diversity and Inclusion Consulting firm.
