Federal Pre-Budget Recommendations Address Sector Issues
The 2007 pre-budget report from the Standing Committee on Finance makes a number of recommendations related to the voluntary sector including changes to the Income Tax Act to increase charitable giving, and a feasibility study to assess a tax measure that would recognize the hours of volunteer activity. New Details about Programs Eligible for Federal Children’s Fitness Tax Credit
The Federal Government has released new details about the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, including information for organizations that explains what programs of physical activity will qualify. Visit the Canada Revenue Agency online for details

CCVO Launches New Website Features: E-bulletin Sign Up, New Policy Section
To better serve our members and others working, volunteering and supporting Calgary’s voluntary sector, CCVO has launched new website features that make our website easier to use. Visit http://www.calgarycvo.org today to subscribe or unsubscribe to our email bulletin, see an enhanced policy section with the latest policy news and updates on CCVO’s policy work, and to register for CCVO events online (none currently listed).
New CRA Brochure about Tax Changes for Donations of Ecologically Sensitive Land & Securities
A new Canada Revenue Agency pamphlet for donors outlines tax changes that apply to donations made after May 1, 2006. The brochure describes the new the capital gains inclusion rate of zero. Social Venture Partners’ Application Deadline Jan. 19
Social Venture Partners (SVP) Calgary will be selecting a Calgary charity a multi-year financial investment. The focus will be on an agency whose services or programs provide intervention to at-risk children or youth by connecting them with positive influences. Agencies whose mandate fulfills this focus and who are interested in a long-term relationship with an engaged philanthropy organization should apply for funding. The deadline for submissions is January 19, visit www.svpcalgary.org for details and the online grant application.
Book Review: Murray, Vic, ed., Management of Nonprofit and Charitable Organizations in Canada, (Markham: LexisNexis Canada Inc., 2006)
A new book edited by University of Victoria Adjunct faculty member Vic Murray features articles by two Calgarians: Andrea McManus, CCVO Board Chair and President of the Development Group; and Keith Seel, Director, Mount Royal College's Institute for Nonprofit Studies. January 18- Building Calgary's Talent - Creativity & Innovation in the Workplace
This Calgary Chamber of Commerce is a half day workshop to explore practical solutions for the labour force challenge. The workshop will feature a keynote address from Lance Carlson, President and CEO, Alberta College of Art and Design and industry panelists from First Calgary Savings, Icom Productions, General Dynamics, IBM Canada and Critical Mass. April 2-3 OutRights, Human Rights Conference (Calgary, Westin Hotel)
This conference will be an opportunity to share knowledge, create action and raise awareness on the human rights issues facing GLBT communities and their allies. Expected to attract over 500 delegates from across North America, OutRights will feature a variety of presentations and plenary sessions including guest speakers and expert panels, encompassing four conference themes relating to GLBT rights: Inclusion Within, Essential Rights, Creating Social Change, Health. The Alberta Emerald Foundation is seeking nominations for the Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence to be presented in June 2007. The Awards recognize excellence in preserving, protecting, enhancing and sustaining our environment. Judges look at the positive, tangible and long-term impact of projects as well as, where appropriate, efforts that reflect collaborative approaches.
