September 19- CCVO Lunch’n Learn: Spotlight on HR Issues in the Voluntary Sector SIGN UP TODAY!
Join CCVO for a Lunch’n Learn featuring Bonnie Schiell, Research Manager with the national HR Council for the Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector. This event will introduce the work of the Council to address HR issues in the sector, and will discuss current HR trends including challenges recruiting and retaining staff. September 27- “Dialogues on Democracy: “MLAs and Constituents: How can we work better together?” (5:30 p.m.- 8 p.m.)

It is a non-partisan event focused on building better relationships between the people who are elected to the Provincial Legislature and the Calgarians they serve. October 19- MRC Event: Profound Possibilities: Organizational Transformation Through Nonprofit Alliances with Jane Arsenault
Mount Royal College's Institute for Nonprofit Studies 4th Burnett Duckworth & Palmer Seminar on nonprofit issues. Recent surveys of the nonprofit sector suggest that the current organizational model for nonprofits may not be sustainable due to resource limitations and lack of capacity to plan for the future. Jane Arsenault, author of 'Forging Nonprofit Alliances' will engage nonprofit leaders in a discussion that examines different alliance strategies to foster change from the stand-alone agency model that has dominated charitable activity for the past 400 years. New Rural Development Funding Set to Launch in October
The new Rural Alberta Development Fund has brought on ten new Board members who will guide the program’s distribution of $100 million to rural communities. The official program launch is scheduled for October and then the Board will call for short written proposals from rural communities and organizations. Alberta Government Seeking Input on Fish Conservation Strategy
Alberta Sustainable Resources Development is seeking feedback about the province’s proposed Fish Conservation Strategy for Alberta 2006-2010. The online survey is accessible until October 1, 2006. Visit Sustainable Resource Development online for information and to fill out the survey.
September 19- CCVO to Launch New Series of Publications
CCVO is launching a series of short In Brief notes that provide a quick snapshot of timely and relevant information about key issues affecting the sector. The In Brief notes include an analysis of how the issue is expected to affect the sector, how organizations may respond, and where organizations can go for more information. The first In Brief note will be launched at our Lunch’n Learn event on September 19.
Alberta Board Development Program Seeking Volunteers
Alberta’s Board Development Program is seeking volunteers to train as workshop instructors. Successful applicants receive specialized training in board governance and are expected to conduct 10 workshops with boards of not-for-profit organizations over a period of 2 years. New CRA Process for Re-Registration as a Canadian Charity
The Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency has implemented a new process with regard to organizations applying for re-registration as a Canadian charity. Depending on an organization’s taxation year and the date of its Notice of Intent to Revoke, the organization may be subject to meet certain subsections of the Income Tax Act. Safe Cities-Safe Streets Conference Report Released
The Canada West Foundation has released a summary report from their inaugural Safe Streets - Safe Cities Conference that examined the chronic social problems affecting urban society and proposed workable, compassionate solutions to make cities safe. New Report about Sense of Well Being Among People with Disabilities
Statistics Canada has released a new study that explores the determinants of subjective well-being among people with disabilities. The study found that well-being, measured as self-reported levels of happiness, is independent of the type of physical disability. Visit Statistics Canada online to see the full report.
Community Health Survey Data Now Available
The 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey: Public Use Microdata File, is now available. The survey includes information on topics including physical activity, height and weight, smoking, exposure to second hand smoke, alcohol consumption, general health, chronic health conditions, injuries, and use of health care services. The data is available free of charge to non-profit organizations in the health sector for research and non-commercial purposes. Visit Statistics Canada online for more information.
