Government News
Your opportunity to comment on an important issue: Royalty Review
The independent Royalty Review Panel (created by the government) reports that Albertans do not receive their fair share from energy development. If all their recommendations were implemented, up to $2 billion more would flow to the government every year. Imagine how those funds could be invested to truly, tangibly benefit all Albertans. The government is expected to make a decision on the recommendations this month. There is now an important opportunity to provide comments. We ask you to go online right away to read the Panel’s report and consider voicing your thoughts (through the feedback form) – and to encourage others to do the same.

Lobbyists Act Update
Last week the government committee studying Bill 1, the Lobbyist Act, heard presentations by CCVO, ECVO (in Edmonton), the Muttart Foundation (representing 160 organizations), Volunteer Alberta and others. Together, we stated that transparency should not come at the expense of nonprofits and those they serve. The committee is now deliberating. You can view meeting transcripts and other details online. Thank you to everyone who was actively involved in this issue.

Calgarians graded 12 key issue areas including learning, culture, environment and the gap between rich and poor. The results are a sobering wake-up call. Study examines administrative burden of Canada’s funder practices
A Wellesley Institute study shows that the shift from long-term core funding in the early 1990s to today’s short-term, targeted/program funding has strained nonprofits and taken resources away from service delivery and innovation. The study, We Can't Do Business This Way, states that processes could be streamlined to better meet nonprofit and funder needs.
