Bill 1, the Lobbyists Act - Special Email Bulletin
October 15, 2007
Discussions at recent meetings of the Standing Committee on Government Services (the group responsible for recommending changes to Bill 1, the Lobbyists Act) show that many important concerns raised by the nonprofit/voluntary sector have not been understood or addressed.
Although the committee has determined a few beneficial changes to the Lobbyists Act, it continues to head in a direction that could force nonprofits to significantly alter they way they work. The Act could add administrative burden, hinder collaboration, and cut government off from a readily-available and informed pipeline to community. This helps no one.
The provincial government has repeatedly stated its desire to be connected to community, to understand community issues, and to work with others to find innovative solutions – all laudable goals. Unfortunately, Bill 1 could make these goals significantly harder to achieve.
A CALL TO ACTION
Bill 1 is moving forward very quickly. Many key conversations are taking place THIS WEEK. We are asking you to contact MLAs, as well as anyone you know in government, to explain your concerns about the Lobbyists Act. And we’re asking you to do it today.
CCVO’s letter to MLAs explains our concerns. You are welcome and encouraged to use it to become informed, to send to others, or to copy text from to use in your own letters, conversations, etc.
View our webpage or the government website for more information. If you have any questions or information regarding Bill 1, please contact Robyn Crawford at CCVO at 261-6655.
