Educational Roundtable Discussion
Wednesday, May 28, 2008
CCVO invites representatives of educational institutions and organizations providing training and education for the nonprofit human service sector workforce to a roundtable discussion session of cross-sector issues, trends and strategies. The discussion will explore possibilities in program development and research.
Government News
CRA Releases Policy Statement on Volunteerism
The Promotion of Volunteerism outlines when promoting volunteerism can be considered a charitable activity. An organization may be registered as a charity if its purpose is to promote volunteerism in the community-at-large through broad-based activities.
CRA Seeking Feedback on Proposed Guidelines for Sports Organizations
CRA is seeking comments about proposed Guidelines for Sport and Charitable Registration under the Income Tax Act that will help clarify how organizations carrying out activities that include sport can potentially qualify for charitable registration. Visit CRA online to submit your comments by the June 30 deadline.
AFP and Imagine Canada Submit Joint Petition Regarding CRTC Telemarketing Rules
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and Imagine Canada have filed a petition to the Governor in Council to seek relief for all registered charities from fees proposed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

CGA Ontario creates new guide to governance
The Certified General Accountants of Ontario (CGA) have released Grassroots Governance: Governance and the Non-Profit Sector that provides a great starting point for volunteers and board members who want information on good governance for their grassroots organization.
Mentoring Information available
The Center for Coaching & Mentoring is a site dedicated to providing resources and information on leadership, coaching, and mentoring. Free resources include quizzes, articles, survey results, interactive courses, presentations, and book reviews.
Collaborative Guide for Social Change
This guide identifies how collaborating with business can enhance social change outcomes and provides tips on meeting the challenge that such collaboration creates.
Annual review of US philanthropy released
The Foundation Centre has created a yearly journal of philanthropy, with the first issue highlighting key topics and trends from 2007. The journal also identifies key contacts, names award winners, investigates the state of foundation giving, and offers a media review including books, magazines and blogs

Charity Village releases white paper on social finance
CharityVillage recently published a report entitled, Strengthening Organizational Capacity: Social Finance Survey Report. The report explores the concept of social finance, or finance with a social or environmental mission, and how it may be an excellent opportunity for nonprofits to identify new ways of accessing capital.

Alberta bursary to celebrate legacy of environmental advocate
The Dr. Martha Kostuch certificate program and bursary will use a multi-stakeholder, consensus-building process to improve Alberta’s environment. The program will be offered by the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, who will also administer the bursary. Representatives from non-government organizations will be eligible to apply for the bursary.
New benchmarks of online fundraising released
An American study measuring Internet fundraising and activism of nonprofits highlights the continued importance of the Internet for mission-focused groups. The 2008 eNonprofit Benchmarks Study reports that the total amount raised online increased by 19% between 2006 and 2007.
