CCVO Membership Campaign 2008

CCVO 2008 AGM
Our AGM is booked for June 25, 2008 at La Joie de Vivre. Members can look forward to receiving further details and invitations soon.
Website Updates
We’ve been updating the CCVO website. Take a look at our updated Special Offers page, which now includes organizations with office space to lease to other non-profits, and also our new Funders Task Group page, part of the Calgary HR Initiative.

Community Economic Development for Calgary luncheon
On April 4, 2008 at 12pm, Todd Hirsch, senior economist at ATB Financial, will be delivering a 2008 economic outlook. This will be followed by a panel discussion on social enterprise and Calgary's economy, hosted by Momentum. For information contact David Wilson at 204-2668.

High return on investment in Canadian fundraising
The Offord Group’s The National Report on Fundraising Trends and Cost Effectiveness study of Canadian charities that issued tax receipts during the period of 2001 - 2005 found that the average Canadian charity receives $9.45 for every dollar spent on fundraising.
New Arts awards announced
Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has created a new Visual Arts Award in the amount of $50,000. Nominations for the awards are due May 1.
Wild Rose Foundation calls for Nominations for Corporate Volunteer Awards of Excellence
The Wild Rose Foundation is calling upon Alberta’s non-profit sector to recognize Alberta’s businesses for their contribution to the communities in which they operate. Deadline for nominations is April 11th, 2008.

Google for Non Profits
Google has launched a new site with programs, tutorials and ideas for nonprofits. Included tools are Google Grants (which provides free advertising) and the ability to accept donations through Google Checkout.
Cautionary note: If protecting your website’s users’ privacy is paramount for your organization, you may wish to thoroughly check Google’s practices around tracking and sharing web-surfing habits.
Free Philanthrocapitalism e-book
Just Another Emperor? The Myths and Realities of Philanthrocapitalism by Michael Edwards (a director with the Ford Foundation) discusses recent attempts to embed the principles of capitalism in efforts to transform & better society.
Free Flickr charity memberships available
Through a partnership with TechSoup.Org, Flickr is offering 10,000 Canadian or American charities free membership accounts. Flickr is a photo sharing community that also offers social networking and discussion forums.

New article examines the role of staff and volunteers in NPOs
Paid staff within nonprofit organizations are often concerned that their jobs may be vulnerable to substitution by unpaid volunteers. A new article entitled The Interchangeability of Paid Staff and Volunteers in Nonprofit Organizations indicates that substitution actually occurs both ways.

Canada West Foundation releases report on civic engagement
The Next West Generation: Young Adults, Identity and Democracy examines how the generation of Canadians currently in their 20s and 30s view politics and government. The report is intended to help Canadians and their leaders appreciate where this generation is coming from and how to increase their engagement in civic life.
