CCVO In Brief - Provincial Budget Analysis
CCVO has released a new In Brief publication that assesses the impact of 2008/09 provincial budget on the nonprofit/voluntary sector. CCVO asked organizations from across the sector to identify what they were hoping to see in the budget and to describe how they expect it to affect them and the people they serve. The In Brief summarizes the information we have received thus far.

CRA releases information on model objects
The CRA has released a new document outlining their policies around acceptable purposes - or objects - for charitable organizations, as well as a list of examples that the CRA approves.
Consultation on new Provincial Land Use Framework
The Government of Alberta has released a Draft Land-use Framework to address the growth pressures facing the province. Alberta’s land and water resources are facing growing demands, and the Land Use Framework is an important first step towards developing policies to manage these demands. View the Land Use Framework online and submit your comments by June 20.
Communities to share $254 million to create 2,200 units of affordable housing
The provincial government has allocated $242 million to create more affordable housing units, and $12.4 million to provide rent supplements for lower income residents. All Alberta municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and the private industry may apply for affordable housing project funding under this year’s Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

Executive Directions - now accepting applications!
The Calgary Executive Directions capacity building program for non-profit executive directors is now accepting applications for the next two sessions of the two-year program, scheduled to begin in September 2008 and January 2009. The deadline for applications is Friday, June 20th. To request an application form please contact ramona@executivedirections.org.
Boland Survey of not-for-profit salaries and HR practices
The annual Boland salary and HR survey for the nonprofit sector is seeking participants. Survey participants receive comprehensive regional and national data (including information specific to Alberta) on positions, benefits and perks, turnover, paid time off, overtime compensation and forecasts about salary budget increases.
Become a Vital Signs Grader- have your say
Informed, interested and involved Calgarians are invited to be graders for the 2008 Vital Signs Report. You will be asked to grade Calgary on key issue areas to measure the vitality of the city, identify trends, and assign grades to areas critical to the quality of life in Calgary.

Non-profit Perspectives on Social Finance
Strengthening Organizational Capacity, a recent Charity Village report, highlights the findings of a small international survey conducted over the winter of 2007/08 to explore the emerging world of social finance from the perspective of nonprofit organizations.
Health care sector main beneficiary of Canadian Foundations giving in 2006
According to Philanthropic Foundations Canada, 58% of Canadian Foundation grants in 2006 went to education, health, and social services. Of that amount, 20% was given to organizations involved in the health sector, which includes mental health and addiction services.
New direction for United Way of America
In a recent Washington Post article, the United Way of America announced a new focus for their organization and pledged to spend the money raised in the next 10 years only to support programs directly related to education, income and health care. An article by NonProfit Quarterly’s Ruth McCambridge raises concerns about this new initiative, and also shares comments from NPQ’s readership.
