Government News
CRA extends Fundraising Policy consultation
CRA has notified CCVO that they will be extending the deadline to comment on the proposed policy on Fundraising by Charities. The new date will be announced possibly later this week (the current deadline is June 30).
Canada introduces new Not-For-Profit Corporations Act
The Government of Canada has introduced a new Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act aimed at eliminating unnecessary regulation and providing flexibility to the not-for-profit sector. If the new Act is passed, organizations currently incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act will have three years to apply for corporate status under the Not-For-Profit Corporations Act.
Alberta Community Organizations Property Tax Exemption Consultation
Alberta’s current Community Organization Property Tax Exemption Regulation will expire in October, 2008, and the conditions that need to be met before a property tax exemption is approved are now under review. The public can provide comments to the Department of Municipal Affairs until June 30, 2008.

Members needed for Premier’s Council on Arts and Culture
Community leaders are invited to join the Premier’s Council on Arts and Culture. Applicants with knowledge or background in the areas of culture, arts, heritage, recreation, sports or the voluntary sector, along with experience in board governance will be considered. Applications due July 4.
Human Resources
Need Student Volunteers?
From September to December, approximately six groups of three to four University of Calgary students will be available to undertake short term special projects and other types of volunteer work in Calgary. Apply by June 27 to Volunteer Calgary.
Free Legal Assistance!
Pro-Bono Students Canada at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law provides free legal assistance to charities and nonprofits. Law students who are interested in doing volunteer work are matched with non-profit agencies, government organizations and other public interest organizations.
Free Employment Standards Training
The Basics of Employment Standards is a free, interactive online course offered by the Department of Immigration and Employment. Topics include earnings and pay stubs; minimum wage and hours of work; overtime; holidays, vacation and leave; youth employment; and termination of employment.
HR Council Case Studies available
Workplaces that Work is a new series from the HR Council that provides case studies on organizations that have taken a unique approach to addressing a particular HR need or issue.
Summer Student Employment Grants Survey
Volunteer Alberta is conducting research on access to human resource funding for nonprofits. Did your organization apply for STEP (provincial) and/or CSJ (federal) funding this year? Were you approved for either grant? If so, please participate in Volunteer Alberta’s online survey on the effectiveness of these grant programs.

Online Nonprofit Resources
