Annual Report Released
CCVO’s 2007-2008 Annual Report was released at our AGM on June 25 and will be available online shortly. All members will receive a hard copy in the mail.
AGM report
CCVO’s 2008 AGM was held June 25 at La Joie de Vivre. Thank you to all that attended and made the event such a success. Special thanks to the Honourable Lindsey Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, who was our keynote speaker.
New Board of Directors members
A warm welcome is extended our newest Board of Directors members – Arden Brummell, David Gates, Patti Morris and Sue Tomney, who joined the board during the CCVO AGM.
Outgoing Board members
CCVO thanks its outgoing Board Directors, Sam Aylesworth and Teresa Woo-Paw, for their hard work and dedication to CCVO over the last two years.
HR InBrief Release
CCVO has released a new In Brief, Reaching the Limit – Workplace issues in the human services sector. The report looks at the staffing crisis in the human services sector and will be available in print shortly.
Government News
New Federal Lobbying Rules Now in Effect
On July 2, the new Federal Lobbying Act became law. If your registered charity or nonprofit spends a total of 20% (approximately 32 hours per month) of paid staff time on federal lobbying (including lobbying senior public officials who are now called designated public office holders), you must register as a federal lobbyist and submit reports. Organizations that hire government relations consultants or professional lobbyists should also familiarize themselves with this Act.
Small and Rural Charities: Making a Difference for Canadians
This report includes an ambitious action plan aimed at helping small and rural charities meet their legislative and regulatory obligations more simply and easily.
Giving to Charity: Information for donors - Speaker's Kit
This CRA-composed donor information kit provides posters, information sheets and slide shows for talking to potential and current donors on registered charities, donating wisely, and reducing income tax through charitable donations.
Alberta Mentoring Partnership Leadership Team
This innovative partnership between government and community agencies will give Alberta’s youth new opportunities to benefit from positive role models. The partnership brings 29 organizations and youth together in the first association of its kind in Canada.
National Philanthropy Day Vote Postponed Until Fall 2008
The House of Commons had delayed a vote on Bill S-204, the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) legislation. The bill has received wide-spread support and is expected to receive consideration and ultimately be approved upon its debate during the next session, likely in late September. AFP thanks all those who have offered support, and encourages supporters of Bill S-204 to contact their MPs throughout the summer.

This year’s Western Sponsorship Congress will take place in Calgary on October 29 & 30.This event is ideal for non profits, charities, member based associations, professional or amateur sport organizations.

Imagine Canada approves first Ethical Code participants
The Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code (The Ethical Code) is a self-regulatory initiative that sets a framework for best practices in fundraising and financial reporting. More than 100 charities from coast to coast have signed on for the first phase.
Recognize your ‘star’ volunteer
Nominate a dedicated volunteer with your organization for the Wild Rose Foundation’s Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards. Nominees must be current Alberta residents, and will be judged based on their contribution to their community and their past and current volunteer activity. The deadline for nominations is September 26, 2008.
Annual partnership awards accepting nominations
Imagine Canada is now accepting nominations for their Canadian Business and Community Partnership Awards. To be eligible, partnerships must be between a not-for-profit organization and a Canadian business and must have been in existence for at least two years. Nominations must be received by September 26, 2008.

Tackling Urban Social Issues
A new Canada West Foundation paper, Drawing Lines: Defining the Roles of Municipal, Provincial and Federal Governments in Addressing Urban Social Issues in Canada , provides a thought-provoking blueprint for clarifying the roles and responsibilities of cities, provinces and the federal government when it comes to addressing urban social issues.
New study addresses flaws in grant application and reporting
According to Drowning in Paperwork, Distracted from Purpose, published by Project Streamline, the current system for grant application and reporting needs to be fixed to reduce on time, energy, and effectiveness burdens. The study outlines ten key ways that the current system creates more burdens than it relieves, and also recommends four core principles for change.
Insight into boards of medium-sized American organizations
The Urban Institute’s new report Boards of Midsize Nonprofits: Their Needs and Challenges focuses on governance among midsize nonprofits, identifying certain problem areas, and suggesting strategies for strengthening midsized boards.
