New CCVO Publications
Check out the CCVO’s Winter 2008 newsletter for content including a checklist for board governance and an article on why Lobbying is a good idea. The new In Brief gives accurate statistics of the size of the voluntary sector in Calgary.
Government News
Stelmach releases Alberta’s Cultural Policy
The Spirit of Alberta was released January 25, and sets out the four basic goals of: Access to cultural experiences and opportunities; Enhanced community capacity for the support and promotion of cultural activities; Encouragement for the work of the artistic community; and Fostering growth, sustainability and investment in Alberta’s cultural industries.
CRA Considers making research charitable
The Canadian Revenue Agency is holding a Consultation on proposed Guidelines for Research as a Charitable Activity . Charities and individuals are welcome to give their feedback on the guidelines by February 29, 2008.
Considering Registered Charity Status?
The CRA has recently updated its information page for ethnocultural groups looking to become registered charities.
Alberta Government to eliminate Homelessness
The Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness has been created to develop and oversee the implementation of a 10-year strategic plan to address homelessness across Alberta. The plan will be presented to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in Fall 2008.
Professional Development
Linda Graff volunteerism workshops coming to Calgary!
Linda will be holding four sessions on volunteer management, recruitment and retention February 26-27 at the Sheraton Four Points hotel.
University of Calgary Leadership Capacity courses
The University of Calgary’s Centre for Social Work Research and Professional Development is currently offering several courses on building leadership capacity, with special discounted fees for multiple enrollments.
Awards, Funding and Fundraising
Volunteer Calgary Leadership Awards
Since 1997, these awards have recognized leaders of volunteer programs, outstanding youth volunteers, employee volunteers, innovative volunteer programs and exceptional individual volunteers.
Grant Funds the elimination of Family Violence
Prairieaction Foundation’s CARE Grant Program funds front-line social service agencies and other nonprofit organizations conducting research to eliminate family violence and abuse. Applications are now available – email Prarieaction for more details.
Non-Profit Study a First
The eNonprofit Benchmarks Study is the first to look at the effectiveness of major American nonprofit organizations using the Internet to raise money and influence public policy. It is also a tool that can be used by other non-profits to compare and measure their own online success.
Online Fundraising Ethics Test
Take the e-Philanthropy group’s Ethics Self-Test (based on e-Philanthropy’s fundraising Code of Ethics) to find out whether you measure up to their standards on online fundraising.

Study Highlights Non-Profit Board Practices
A recent national study on board governance practices in the voluntary sector has created a database of successful practices throughout Canada for other non-profits to work from.
Global Non-profit contributions measured
The UN Nonprofit Handbook Project was implemented to track the contributions of the non-profit sector and their volunteers to national economies. This Johns Hopkins University study measures the success and level of implementation the project has had since its inception.

The Who Cares? series involves discussions on volunteering and community involvement. 6 audio files (with transcripts) from the series are now available at Who Cares? Canada.

Voluntary Sector website
The Government of Alberta’s The Voluntary Sector in Alberta website provides statistics and links to valuable resources for those working in the sector, including sources of government funding. Human Resources News
Security clearances for volunteers now available at multiple locations
The Calgary Police Service has just announced that security clearances can now be completed at multiple CPS offices. As of January 29, volunteers and employees may now visit both the District 2 and District 4 branch offices (as well as downtown) to complete this process.
Need a Summer Student?
The Provincial Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) has just implemented a wage subsidy increase from $6.05 to $7 per hour for non-profits. Alternatively, the Federal Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program provides $8.00 per hour funding for eligible non-profits. The two grants can not be combined to fund one position.

Looking for a summer student to redesign your website, create new marketing and communications materials or create a new organizational logo? The Mount Royal College Electronic Publishing course has multiple interns available from May to August.
