The Provincial Government Inside Out (Part One) – Jan. 30 morning
Well known political analyst Paul McLoughlin and government relations specialist Hal Danchilla are returning to CCVO to present an updated, lively overview of the current landscape in Alberta politics. This session is ideal for nonprofit leaders, board members, and staff who work in government relations or policy. It will be followed by a Part Two event on Feb. 26. Learn more and register.

Government News
Privacy Amendments may include non-profits
The PIPA (Personal Information Protection Act) Review Committee Final Report (November 2007) suggests that the current provincial privacy legislation be amended to apply fully to all not-for-profit organizations, subject to a one-year transition period. CCVO is assessing the potential impact of the legislation on the sector, and will continue to forward information on developments.
PIPA Training offered by Provincial Government
The Government of Alberta is hosting a FREE training opportunity entitled Understanding Privacy Legislation, to be held Wednesday January 23 in Calgary. The event will focus on how PIPA affects requests for personal information in the workplace.

FREE Governance development opportunity
The governance peer learning circle for Winter 2008 will focus on governors/directors from nonprofit arts/arts serving organizations and sports and recreation organizations. Reminder: Corporate Community Investment Extravaganza
On Feb. 7 in Calgary, Imagine Canada is hosting interactive sessions for businesses and nonprofits on community investment and corporate giving. CCVO member nonprofits receive a discount.
Program Evaluation Skills Workshop
The Canadian Evaluation Society will hold a workshop on February 28 in Calgary on Understanding Program Evaluation and Building an Evaluation Framework. Register by February 21.

Calgary Learns is currently taking applications for Initiative funding grants from organizations that plan to research, develop and/or pilot innovative foundational learning opportunities for adult Calgarians.

Calgary Learns is looking for nominations for the LOLA Awards, which recognize the achievements of learners, educators, and the designers of continuing learning programs in Calgary.

2006 Community Profiles
Statistics Canada’s latest Community Profiles report includes information from the 2006 Census for over 5400 communities in Canada, including Calgary.
Art’s Economic Contribution
Published by an Australian university, Art and Innovation: An Evolutionary Economic View of the Creative Industries explores the economic and cultural contribution of the arts.
Canadian Sport Plan Released
Sport Canada released the Canadian Sport Policy Federal-Provincial/Territorial Priorities for Collaborative Action 2007-2012, designed to enhance participation, excellence, capacity, and interaction.
Fundraisers report continued growth in online giving
Results from the US Summer 2007 Philanthropic Giving Index (PGI) Survey reveal that 34.4% of charities are finding success with online fundraising and e-mail campaigns. Participants ranked online giving as the least successful fundraising technique mentioned in the survey. A press release is available, although the full report is fee-accessed.

Non-Profit leaders outscore business counterparts
A 2007 US study of over 2,500 management leaders has revealed that non-profit leaders are considered more effective than for-profit leaders by their peers, managers and staff in 14 of 17 dimensions of leadership practice.
Leadership changes in the non-profit and voluntary sector
The face of leadership in the voluntary and nonprofit sector will undergo substantial changes over the next decade as the baby boom generation moves into retirement. Exploring the Looming Leadership Deficit in the Voluntary and Nonprofit Sector examines the upcoming challenges as well as strategies that could be utilized to address this issue.
Young people want to work with nonprofits but not for them
A survey of young nonprofit employees in the US finds that 45% of the most skilled and experienced respondents plan to leave the nonprofit sector. Reasons include burnout (90%), low wages (80%), lack of career advancement (69%), and stress (69%).
