Political parties respond to sector questions
At the beginning of the provincial election, CCVO distributed a three-question survey to the six political party leaders in Alberta concerning the non-profit sector. Read the responses from the Progressive Conservatives, Liberals and NDP.

Provincial Election 2008 – GET OUT AND VOTE ON MARCH 3!
With the elections happening next week, political analysts are predicting that the most important voters this year will be those who are currently ‘undecided’ or that usually stay at home. This election is the one in which every vote will count, and we encourage you to make your voice heard on March 3. Below are some excellent resources to look at before making your way to the polls:
Elections Alberta – find out about your voting station, candidates, and what to take to the polls
Volunteer Alberta – is encouraging all volunteers to participate in the democratic process

Plan It Calgary – Get involved in city planning
The way we plan and build our city has a significant impact on issues that concern charities and non-profits. CCVO has partnered with a number of Calgary organizations to ensure that the social development and non-profit sectors are involved in this process. Career Role Models Needed!
Youth In Motion will be holding a non-profit sector Career Learning Day for Calgary students on May 7th. They are currently looking for ‘career role models’ to present to the students on careers in the non-profit sector. Please contact Lynn Berry at 837-3600.
Funding and Fundraising
University of Calgary grant available
The Committee of 10,000 (a fund overseen by the U of C’s Student Union), offers grants of up to $5,000 to registered non-profits and charities in Calgary. To request a grant application, email the Committee of 10,000 at 10000@su.ucalgary.ca. Application deadline is March 20, 2008.
Multicultural fundraising webconference
The Association of Fundraising Professionals will be holding the webconference ‘Fundraising in a Diverse World’ with David W. Brown on March 11. Participants will gain a better understanding of the multicultural market and its fundraising potential and also gain knowledge of practical, effective marketing techniques to reach this audience.
Sponsorship series workshops
Calgary Sports Council will be hosting the series “Sponsorship: A Fundraising Tool” during March and April. Although there will be a sport-group focus, all non-profits are welcome to attend.
Research
Calgary’s boom a bust for some
New Statistics Canada wage data shows that some Calgarians are not equitably benefiting from the current economic boom. Vibrant Communities Calgary's Living Wage Action Team's research looks at who in Calgary is loosing out.
CPRN launches new public policy research program
Connecting with Canadians brings together community, business, government and youth leaders from across Canada attended to identify priority issues that Canada must address in order to respond to the key challenges facing the country. Its first report describes what Canadians have said they expect from government, business and community organizations and what they believe, as citizens, we should give back to society.
Guide for good governance and ethical practice released
The Panel on the Non-Profit Sector has released a guide that outlines 33 practices designed to support board members and staff leaders of charitable organizations. The guide represents the first time that charities and foundations reflecting a broad cross-section of American nonprofits have come together to develop principles of ethical conduct, accountability, and transparency.
Survey reveals public uncertainty about nonprofit spending
A new survey by Ellison Research reveals that 62% of Americans believe that nonprofit organizations spend more than what is reasonable on overhead and expenses such as administration and fundraising.
