The Charities File: Completing the T3010A
Tuesday, September 18, 9:00am-12:00pm
This free workshop is the next in The Charities File series, a project funded by CRA to assist charities in understanding and complying with the Income Tax Act. In this session Betty Thompson will walk you through the sections of the T3010A charities return. This session is presented at the Riverview Room of the Talisman Centre. Register today. Government News
80 nonprofits sign Lobbyists Act submission
The Muttart Foundation just released the final joint submission to the Alberta government regarding Bill 1: the Lobbyists Act. The submission is endorsed by 80 nonprofit organizations (including CCVO). We encourage you to read the submission, pass it on to your networks (including nonprofit organizations and individuals in government), and consider endorsing it. To be on the supplemental list of endorsers that will be sent to government this fall, email Bob Wyatt. The public is invited to submit to government by Friday, August 24.
Tax Payer Alert issued by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Warning: The CRA is urging taxpayers to be wary of promotions of tax shelter gifting arrangements promising huge tax savings (including schemes with donation receipts equal to 3 or 4 times the cash payment). The CRA has audited 26,000 individuals and denied $1.4 billion in claimed donations.
Registered charities and Do Not Call regulations
An article by Canadian Fundraiser explains that registered charities are exempt from the general national Do Not Call list (where consumers place a blanket ban on all unsolicited telecommunications). Telemarketing charities and their third-party telemarketers are still subject to a number of other rules, however.

Calgary Arts Development released results of their Open Space meeting about Alberta’s New Cultural Policy. View comments from members of the arts community and the summary letter sent to government.

A Canadian survey shows that socially responsible investing has significantly increased from 2004-2006.
Corporate responsibility correlates with stock performance
Goldman Sachs released a report showing that companies that are leaders in environmental, social and governance policies are also leading the pack in stock performance – by an average of 25%.
