CCVO involved in Shared Services research project
The concepts of shared services and shared space are being explored by a number of organizations, and CCVO is engaged in a research project to explore the viability of shared service models in Calgary. Is your organization currently offering or exploring the development of a shared service? Are you interested in finding out how shared services could benefit your organization? Member Viewpoint Survey results
CCVO’s first Member Viewpoint Survey Report is now available online. The survey questioned members on their top concerns and issues. Thank you to all members that participated. The results will be used to inform and advance our work with all levels of government and guide our strategies to raise awareness about the sector
Early-Bird Membership Renewal winner announced
Congratulations to our Early-Bird membership renewal winner, Youville Women’s Residence Society of Alberta, who won a CCVO event gift certificate.

Provincial
2008 Alberta Budget released
The 2008 Alberta Provincial Budget was released April 22nd. Over the coming weeks, CCVO will be working with other non-profit organizations to analyze the details of the budget and its ramifications for Alberta’s voluntary sector.
Proposed Alberta Privacy Act change to affect nonprofits & charities
A report currently before government proposes that Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) be amended to apply fully to all not-for-profit organizations, subject to a one year transition period. CCVO has current information on the proposal available on our website.
New phone codes coming to Alberta
Phone Code 587 will join 780 and 403 in Alberta on September 8, meaning Albertans will have to dial 10 digits, including area code, for both local and long distance calls. The Alberta government is advising that organizations begin changing their records and reprogramming office equipment well in advance to be prepared for June 23, when a transitional dialing period will begin.
Federal
Nonprofits to be affected by National Do Not Call List
The National Do Not Call List will be launched by September 30, 2008. Registered charities are exempt from the new rules concerning telephone solicitations, but they will still have to keep their own internal do not call lists. All nonprofit organizations that are not registered charities will be subject to the new rules.
Federal Lobbying Act may take effect in summer 2008
The new federal Lobbying Act is likely to come into effect this summer. There is still discussion on what types of non-profit and registered charity communications might be exempt from the new reporting obligations, which will change current federal lobbyist reporting standards.
CRA
CRA releases its Fundraising Policy Consultation paper – FEEDBACK OPPORTUNITY
The paper addresses proposed guidelines for CRA's Charities Directorate on fundraising activities by registered charities. CRA is seeking feedback prior to June 30 on how the guidelines can be streamlined or otherwise made most useful for charities to assess their fundraising practices.
FAQ's on the T3010A
The Charities File is a collaborative project set up to enhance knowledge of CRA charity filing requirements, and to assist registered charities in meeting current requirements. The CCVO e-Bulletin will be providing links to various Charities File resources over the next few months.Have questions about the annual return? Imagine Canada releases Federal Election Readiness Kit
With a 2008 federal election a strong possibility, Imagine Canada has convened a National Sector Task Force on Election Readiness to create an electronic Election Readiness Kit for sector organizations to give to politicians. The kit incorporates facts on the sector and advances public policy priorities and recommendations from sector organizations for political parties to include in their Party platforms.
Imagine Canada launches new Insurance Centre
The new Insurance and Liability Resource Centre for Nonprofits helps charities and nonprofits become informed insurance consumers and take a practical approach to managing risk so that they can protect their people (volunteers, staff, board members, clients, participants) and fulfill their missions.

Worker satisfaction in the voluntary sectorThe Gilbert Center has released a new report detailing the quality of work life issues in civil society. Doing Well by Doing Good: A Report on Work Satisfaction in Civil Society compares worker satisfaction in the voluntary sector with other sectors.
Professional Development
Vitalize 2008
Open to all members of the voluntary sector, this three-day conference in Edmonton occurs June 12-14 and offers innovative skills development sessions, inspirational speakers, and an excellent opportunity to network with and learn about what other nonprofits are doing throughout the province.
Vitalize 2008 Youth/Mentor Program
During Vitalize 2008, a skills development conference for outstanding youth volunteers in Alberta will be held. Please contact Lori Campbell if your organization has a youth volunteer who would benefit from this experience. Funding will be provided for their attendance by the program.
Funding, Fundraising and Awards
National Philanthropy Day
The Association of Fundraising Professionals has been working for several years to have the Federal Government recognize National Philanthropy Day (November 15), and currently has Bill S-204 before the Senate for its third reading. If passed, it will go to the House for debate, and Canada will be the first country with a formally recognized National Philanthropy Day. AFP is asking organizations and individuals to contact their local senator by April 28th to show support for the initiative.
Nominate local philanthropists for the Generosity of Spirit™ Program award
AFP Calgary & Area Chapter’s Generosity of Spirit™ Program was created to acknowledge those who demonstrate the Spirit of philanthropy. Nominate the individuals and organizations that make a difference to your organization and to the non-profit community by freely contributing their time, skills and money to ensure the financial health of your organization by May 23rd.
Alberta Community Crime Prevention Grant Program
The Alberta Government has designated nearly $600,000 in grant money for communities to deliver local crime prevention initiatives. Groups involved in community safety and crime prevention can apply for the funding, with the maximum grant award for any initiative being $50,000. Apply by 12pm, May 15 for consideration.
Online fundraising potential for nonprofits continues to grow
The results of the second Convio Online Marketing Nonprofit Benchmark Index™ Study indicate increasing website traffic and online sign-up member or subscriber rates on nonprofit organizations’ websites. Additionally, total nonprofit online revenue, including e-commerce, grew by 25% among participating organizations, with the average gift amount being higher than through other direct response channels, including direct mail and telemarketing.
