UK Passes a New Charities Act
Charity law in Canada is based on the 1601 Statute of Elizabeth of England and on case law. The recent passing of a new Charities Act in the UK may open the door for review and revamping the law in Canada. The Act defines a charity as a body or trust which is for a charitable purpose, and is for the public benefit. It also includes descriptions of the main purposes which are charitable. These purposes better reflect modern practice and needs in society and the sector. For more information, visit the UK Charities Commission website.
