The HR Council's HR Management Standards are designed to support board members, managers and employees in the development and implementation of effective HR policies and practices for non-profit organizations.

A “perfect storm” is developing in the labour force as Baby Boomers approach retirement age. Within five years, companies will be forced to compete for skilled workers in an increasingly shrinking labour market and can expect to experience critical talent shortages. To be successful, organizations need to shift their HR focus from a narrow concentration on the young and work to attract, develop and retain workers of all ages.

The Alberta Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Workforce Council has developed the Workforce Initiatives Inventory to provide a forum for nonprofit organizations to obtain and share information about nonprofit workforce initiatives throughout Alberta. The inventory is divided into four categories: Human Resources Management, Leadership Development, Information and Research and Shared Space and Services.

Many of the immigrants who come to Canada are highly skilled and educated; they are doctors, lawyers, engineers, nurses, trades people, entrepreneurs and investors. They contribute to Canada socially, culturally and economically. Immigrants are also a valuable asset to Canada’s export industry, as many possess knowledge of foreign languages, and have contacts that can expand Canada’s export trade market.

Workforce issues have changed substantially over the past year for the nonprofit sector in Calgary. The economic downturn has affected all aspects of organizational life including funding, service delivery and workforce. In order to understand the changes the sector’s workforce is undergoing, in summer 2009 CCVO launched the Calgary HR Initiative Workforce Needs Survey.
