Many of the immigrants who come to Canada are highly skilled and educated; they are doctors, lawyers, engineers, nurses, trades people, entrepreneurs and investors. They contribute to Canada socially, culturally and economically. Immigrants are also a valuable asset to Canada’s export industry, as many possess knowledge of foreign languages, and have contacts that can expand Canada’s export trade market.

Workforce issues have changed substantially over the past year for the nonprofit sector in Calgary. The economic downturn has affected all aspects of organizational life including funding, service delivery and workforce. In order to understand the changes the sector’s workforce is undergoing, in summer 2009 CCVO launched the Calgary HR Initiative Workforce Needs Survey.

Policy Update - CRA Guidance for Charities on Fundraising (CPS-028)

Two-year program from Grant MacEwan College developed to assist current or future leaders of the nonprofit sector to become more effective in providing leadership.

Charity Village is a web-based organization that includes training programs, tools and reference information designed for those employed by the Canadian Voluntary Sector. Resources also include a national job posting centre and a weekly newsletter of Canadian charitable developments, the Village Vibe.

A certification program and website based on improving organizational practice and aligning employee actions with business goals. Helps employers build valuable relationships with their employees.

This report provides demographic characteristics of the people who work in the sector, what they find satisfying and dissatisfying about their jobs, and their plans and expectations for the future.

Produced by the Calgary HR Initiative, this publication looks at six of the most enduring myths about working in the voluntary sector.

This article examines the interchangeability of paid and volunteer labour and estimates the prevalence of such interchangeability through a series of studies of Canadian nonprofits.
