The Calgary HR Initiative is partnering with Viable Calgary to develop a Workforce Inclusion Plan for Calgary’s Nonprofit Sector. Viable Calgary is a workforce initiative focused on increasing the engagement of employees with disabilities in the workforce. In the face of a changing – and aging – labour force, organizations will need to be looking to non-traditional labour sources in order to meet their workforce needs.

Professional development is vital to the success of any organization, but many charities and nonprofits forgo it due to cost and time, especially during an economic slump.

Nonprofit organizations are an essential part of creating and sustaining healthy communities across Alberta. With over 19,000 organizations providing an array of services to virtually every Albertan, billions of dollars in revenues, 2.5 million volunteers and more than 100,000 employees, the nonprofit sector is a foundational component of the province's social and economic infrastructure.

Without doubt, the passion, skill and talents of our workforce are the heart and soul of the nonprofit sector. The commitment and dedication of our employees and volunteers provide the foundation that helps our sector, and our communities thrive.

Our workforce is undergoing dramatic change and the ways we have traditionally envisioned our places of work are being challenged. Over the next decade, all industry sectors, including the nonprofit sector, will need to be creative in finding and retaining qualified employees.

Alberta's nonprofit organizations employ well over 100,000 people and engage millions of volunteers - creating a network of organizations that improve the quality of life for all citizens in the province. Providing cultural, recreation, sports, health, educational and social services to Albertans, the nonprofit sector plays an important role in the economy, generating $8 billion in total revenues (2003).

WorkforceConnect is hosting a unique one-day interactive workshop in Calgary on November 4 to explore trends and actions that advance nonprofit workforce knowledge, best practices and innovative, people-first strategies.
