Katherine van Kooy
(President and CEO)
With a broad and diverse background in consulting, public policy, strategic planning and organizational change, Katherine leads the CCVO in its vision to establish the voluntary sector as an equal partner with government and business in creating a sustainable community. To this end she leads an energetic team working on the cutting edge of policy and cross-sectoral issues to strengthen Calgary’s voluntary sector. Katherine and CCVO are involved in collaborative initiatives such as Alberta’s Voluntary/Sector Initiative (ANVSI), as well as engaging members of the sector, promoting an understanding and awareness of the sector, publishing research, sharing resources for and about the nonprofit/voluntary sector and providing leadership on policy development at all levels of government.
Katherine held senior public policy positions in Saskatchewan and Ontario. In addition to her municipal and provincial government experience, she taught management and public policy courses at the University of Regina. After moving to Calgary in 1998, she established a consulting practice focusing on organizational effectiveness and strategic management. Her academic credentials include an Honours BA in Political Science from the University of Waterloo, graduate studies in International Affairs at Carleton University and an MBA from Cornell University.

Janet Lavoie (CCVO Director, Membership Development) has worked in the voluntary sector for most of her professional life and has volunteered in numerous settings. From heading a small nonprofit to working on national initiatives, Janet brings passion and a breadth of experience to her role. She is particularly intrigues and inspired by the diversity of the sector and the drive and motivations that bring citizens together to create, to serve and to make a change in our community.

Mike has worked with nonprofit organizations for over 20 years in areas such as program development and evaluation, adult education and organizational effectiveness. Mike recently completed his Masters of Arts in Leadership degree from Royal Roads University. His enthusiasm and passion for the sector are evident in his numerous volunteer activities in community services, youth and sports organizations. Mike’s strengths in strategic planning, organizational leadership and team building will be an asset as he leads and coordinates the work of the Calgary HR Initiative.

Laura has worked and volunteered in Calgary for almost twenty years, with over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit and health care sectors, including social research, volunteer management and social planning, and has been a community planner for the Calgary Homeless Foundation. As Policy Analyst, Laura's work at CCVO includes tracking public policy issues, convening sector caucuses, developing position statements, and coordinating research.
Laura holds a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Western Ontario, and a Masters of Environmental Design from the University of Calgary, focused on social planning, conflict management and community development.

Karen is an experienced business communicator who has worked in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors for a number of years. With a BA in Journalism and Communications, she began her career as a print journalist. For more than 15 years she worked as a reporter, photographer and editor for newspapers and magazines in Western Canada - from Manitoba to British Columbia. Eventually, Karen’s career transitioned into public relations and business communications. Before coming to CCVO, Karen held positions at United Way of Calgary and Area, Samaritan’s Purse-Canada, Bantrel, The City of Calgary, the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun.

Marilou is an experienced administrator from the Calgary Board of Education and the University of Alberta. Her experience in financial management, human resource administration and operations management includes the implementation of FOIPP and PeopleSoft at the University of Alberta. She also has experience in the service, retail and manufacturing industries. Marilou brings a wealth of experience in office administration and accounting to CCVO. Marilou holds a Certificate in Business Administration in Advanced Accounting from Mount Royal College.

Jackie has over 10 years of experience in Human Resources in the non-profit and manufacturing sectors. Her experience in the non-profit sector as a Human Resources Manager with Immigrant Services Calgary has provided her with first hand experience and understanding of many of the Human Resources issues and challenges in the non-profit sector. As Jackie continues to work with the CCVO, she is committed to gaining greater understanding of the Calgary non-profit labour force and improving human resources issues in the non-profit sector. Jackie holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Family and Social Relations from the University of Guelph.

Tina brings a wealth of experience to the CCVO with a broad background in corporate administration and IT software and document management. Tina's organizational and interpersonal skills along with her natural ability to learn new systems in today's ever changing office environments is of great benefit to our organization. Tina provides administrative support to Katherine van Kooy and the CCVO team, as well as to the CCVO's Board of Directors. She is the initial point of contact for the organization.
