CCVO Board Of Directors 2011-2012

CCVO’s Board of Directors provides governance and leadership for the organization. The Directors generously volunteer their time and expertise to help CCVO strengthen Calgary’s voluntary sector.

Betty Thompson, FCGA (Chair)

Betty Thompson

Betty is a partner with the accounting firm of Thompson Penner & Lo in Calgary. Betty has focused her audit and financial management services on nonprofit organizations. She presents a variety of seminars on financial, governance and related topics to nonprofit audiences across Canada. In a volunteer capacity, Betty serves as a Board member of the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations and the Calgary Homeless Foundation. Betty has also been appointed to the Calgary Housing Company Board and, at a national level, Betty has been appointed to the Technical Issues Working Group with the Charities Directorate in Ottawa.

Patti Morris (Vice Chair)

Patti Morris

Patti has spent her career in the voluntary sector. She is presently the Executive Director of Wellspring Calgary, an organization which provides support to individuals, and their families, who are living with cancer. Previously, she was the executive director of the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary and also the Alberta Mentor Foundation for Youth. Patti has a Masters in Continuing Education with a specialty in Workplace Learning. She has taught and lectured at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University, and at many conferences and seminars across North America. Recent volunteer roles include: board positions with the Cancervive Foundation of Alberta and CCVO; committee roles with The Calgary Foundation and Cancer Bridges; and support for the Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind and other nonprofit organizations.

Greer Black (Secretary)

Currently the President and CEO of Bethany Care Society, Greer has spent more than 30 years in the health care sector: in service delivery, education and regulatory agencies. He holds an Undergraduate Degreee in Nursing, a Certificate in Adult Education and a Graduate Degree in Health Service Administration. His experience covers a range of health services in several provinces. Within the field of post-secondary education, Greer's experience includes teaching and leading programs at the community college level. He is also experienced with health service delivery management in both private and voluntary sectors, as well as with government organizations responsible for financing and monitoring health service delivery. Greer is a Board member of numerous industry and sector organizations including CCVO, the Alberta Continuing Care Association and Bethany Care Foundation.

Sue Mallon (Treasurer)

Sue has been the CEO of Calgary Family Services since January 2003. Prior to her role as CEO, she was an executive in charge of the Community portfolio with The City of Calgary and has a wealth of experience in management both in the human services and the public sectors. Sue holds a Master of Social Work degree and a Master of Business Administration. Early in her career she worked in the counseling field, followed by a 22-year career with The City of Calgary in various departments such as Social Services, the Commissioner's Office, Finance, Human Resources and Community.

Janet Brown, B.A. (Hons)

Janet Brown

Janet started her career in public opinion research in Toronto 22 years ago. In 1992, while working at Environics Research Group, she was assigned to a research project examining public attitudes in Alberta - a project that spawned an interest in Alberta political affairs. In 2002, Janet started her own consulting practice - Janet Brown Consulting - focused on providing public affairs and marketing research solutions to Alberta-based clients in both the public and private sector. She has a B.A. (Hons) in Political Science from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and she undertook graduate studies in Political Science at York University in Toronto. Janet also studied International Development and International Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, England,

Arden Brummell, M.A., Ph.D.

Arden Brummell

Arden is currently the Managing Director of Scenarios to Strategy, and has over 30 years experience in strategic management, corporate development and academic research. He has also provided strategic management and change management consultant services to a number of nonprofit organizations and local and national government departments. He is Past Chair of Volunteer Calgary and Leadership Calgary, a former Director of The Strategic Leadership Forum, Director of The Alliance for Capitalizing on Change, and a member of The World Future Society.

Judge Edward (Ted) Carruthers

Judge Carruthers was appointed to the Family and Youth Courts of The Provincial Court of Alberta in July 1996 and served as Assistant Chief Judge for this group from 1998 to 2004. Prior to his appointment to the bench he was a partner in a national law firm where his practice centred on commercial transactions, finance and securities regulation. Judge Carruthers has been involved with a number of charitable organizations and community organizations. He has recently retired from the Board of the Calgary Counselling Centre and been an active member of the Parish Council of Christ Church where he has been a parishioner for over 60 years.

Scott Decksheimer

Scott founded the Nine Lions Fund Development Consulting in 2004 and has worked in the nonprofit field for more than 15 years. Before moving to consulting, he was the Director of Fund Development and SAIT, the Executive Director of The Kidney Foundation of Canada (Saskatchewan Branch) and the Manager of Fund Development and Media Relations at the Canadian Diabetes Association, Saskatchewan Division. Scott is active at the local and national levels of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is the Chair elect of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada.

Jordan Deering

Jordan is a partner at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in the Litigation Group with expertise in commercial litigation and a specialization in fraud, corruption and asset recovery. Prior to joining FMC, Jordan clerked at the Alberta Court of Appeal and Court of Queen’s Bench. Jordan has authored several publications and been a panelist at various seminars. Jordan is involved in the Legislative Review Committee of the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and has been a volunteer lawyer for the Student Legal Assistance Program for the University of Calgary.

Randy Paquette

Randy is the Director of Alumni and Community Relations at Mount Royal University. He has 15 years experience in post secondary education in Calgary and Toronto in the areas of student services and recruitment, marketing and communications and alumni and community relations. Randy is Chair of the Mount Royal University Centennial Planning Committee, leading the University's 16-month centennial celebrations, and has been involved in several educational partnerships such as the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) Partnership Steering Committee, the CBE Career Pathways Evaluation Committee and EnCana’s Educational Journeys Working Group. 

Arlene Ponting, Ph.D.

Arlene is Chief Executive Officer of the Science Alberta Foundation, an organization committed to: fostering a scientifically literate citizenry that can make informed decisions about science topics; and encouraging youth to enter careers in science and technology. Arlene currently serves on the Natural Science and Engineering Council of Canada. She was selected as one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People by Alberta Venture in 2008 and one of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award, 2009 by the Women's Executive Network. Arlene also holds a Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Alberta.

David Sprague

David recently completed a 38 year career with BMO Financial Group, his most recent role as the Executive in charge of retail banking for Calgary, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and surrounding rural markets. He was extensively involved with various non profit and charitable organizations through the BMO Employee Charitable Foundation and provided leadership in Canadian Women's Foundation Shelter from the Storm Campaigns, The Learning Partnership's Entrepreneurial Adventure Program and BMO Kid's Help Phone. David is the incoming Chair for 2012 of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, past Chair of the Finance Committee and current member of the Executive, Finance, Building and Branding Committees.

Sue Tomney

Sue Tomney

Sue is the Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA of Calgary. She has an extensive background in marketing and communications, with senior-level positions with both nonprofits and corporations, including Executive Director of the Calgary Stampede Foundation and VP of Marketing and Communications for Imagine Canada. Sue has been co-chair of the Joint Table on Awareness Advisory Committee, Government of Canada Voluntary Sector Initiative, an Advisory Committee member of the Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal College, and a member of the Calgary United Way Cabinet and Calgary’s Poverty Reduction Coalition.
