September 25, 2006- The Treasury Board of Canada has released a detailed list of programs that are cut in order to meet debt reduction targets.
The release, Canada’s New Government cuts wasteful programs, refocuses spending on priorities, achieves major debt reduction as promised, outlines four areas where cuts have been made: programs that were not providing good value for money, unused funds, efficiency saving by streamlining programs, and non-core programs.
The announcement includes the following voluntary sector-related cuts:
Canadian Revenue Agency
• Elimination of advisory committees (including Charities Advisory Committee and other joint committees with the sector)
Canadian Heritage
• $1.1 million in saving through operating/program efficiencies
• $4.6 million reduction to Museums Assistance Program
• Elimination of support for the Canadian Volunteerism Initiative
• $5 million reduction in funding to Status of Women Canada
Human Resources and Skill Development
• $13 million reduction in low priority grants and contributions related to Social Development Partnership Program
• $17.7 million cut in investments for Adult Learning and Literacy Skills Program, $55.4 million cut for youth employment programs, $17.6 cut for the Workplace Skills Strategy
Environment
• $7.6 million reduction in low priority grants and contributions
Various agencies including Western Economic Diversification, Social Science and Humanities Research Council
• Elimination of non-committed funds for social economy programs
